Completely agreed. With Joanne too - one of my first ventures to the movie theatre was Return of the Jedi, and I thought that was amazing and was a huge landmark in my love of sci-fi and filmmaking in general.

I got to see Avatar in 3D IMAX and was moved by the technology and effects, but the story was a cobbling of Ferngully, Dances With Wolves, et. al. Great review!

"Unobtanium" is a real term used in mining and engineering: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium. It's one of those weird cases where a bit of realism (the scientists in the movie WOULD have used the term) actually detracts from the fiction.

Your eight-year-old's experience reminds me of when I saw "Star Wars" as a kid. I thought it was the best movie ever then, as well. Imagine my diappointment when I watched it again as a adult, and realized just how horrible the acting was. But I probably wouldn't have become such a film buff if it weren't for that early, uncritical magic. :)
